Nadiem Verdict: If Unable to Pay Rp809 Billion in Restitution, Assets to Be Seized and Sentence Extended by 5 Years
The Jakarta Corruption Court has sentenced former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, to 10 years in prison for corruption in the procurement of Chromebooks. The panel of judges also ordered him to pay restitution of Rp809.5 billion, with severe consequences if the obligation is not met.
In the verdict read on Tuesday, 30 June 2026, the court ruled that Nadiem must pay the restitution within one month after the ruling becomes legally binding. If he fails to pay, prosecutors are authorised to seize and auction his assets to cover the state losses.
Presiding Judge Purwanto S. Abdullah stated that asset seizure would be the first step taken if the convicted individual does not fulfil the restitution obligation. "If the defendant does not pay the restitution within one month after the ruling becomes legally binding, the defendant’s assets may be seized by the prosecutor and auctioned to cover the restitution," the judge said.
The panel of judges also imposed an additional sanction if the proceeds from the asset seizure are insufficient to cover the Rp809.5 billion restitution. In that event, Nadiem must serve an additional five years in prison.
The court found Nadiem legally and convincingly guilty of committing corruption together with others in the procurement of Chromebooks and Chrome Device Management at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. In addition to the 10-year prison sentence, he was fined Rp1 billion, with a subsidiary of 190 days of confinement. The sentence was lighter than the 18-year prison term and Rp5.68 trillion in restitution demanded by prosecutors.
