Nadiem Requests Judge to Approve Transfer from Detention, Reveals Condition Deteriorating to Emergency Room Admission

JAKARTA - Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim has requested that the panel of judges grant his application for a transfer from detention. This request is due to his fluctuating health condition, which has required him to repeatedly seek hospital treatment. “With all humility, I wish to request that our application for a change in detention status be granted, Your Honours,” Nadiem stated during the trial at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Monday (20/4/2026). When asked about his health condition today, Nadiem claimed he was ready to attend the trial. “My health condition is still up and down. Yesterday, I had a fever for two days because my immunity dropped, so I had to be hospitalised from Tuesday to Sunday,” Nadiem said. The Gojek founder was admitted to hospital shortly after the trial concluded on Monday (13/4/2026). He entered the Emergency Department (IGD) due to a fever reaching 41 degrees Celsius. Nadiem emphasised that he wants to recover quickly to attend the trial without interruptions. Nadiem stated that he needs to undergo surgery. However, the non-sterile conditions in the detention facility are hindering his recovery process. “The surgery cannot be performed if I am not, or the likelihood of it failing is very high if not in sterile conditions with access to care,” he said. Regarding this request, the panel of judges has not yet stated their position and is still deliberating. He had previously undergone surgery, leading to the postponement of the reading of the indictment to early January 2026. During the trial, Nadiem’s health condition has also fluctuated. At the trial on Thursday (5/3/2026), Nadiem admitted that his health had deteriorated and required intensive care. Nadiem is known to have undergone surgery multiple times for the illness he suffers from. Some time ago, the party had also submitted a renewed application for a transfer from detention.
