Nadiem Makarim’s Parents Continue to Attend Court Despite Their Advanced Age
Nono Anwar Makarim, 87, and Atika Algadrie, 81, are often spotted at the trial of former Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology Nadiem Makarim in the Corruption Court (Tipikor) in Central Jakarta. The two are described as Nadiems parents. Franka Franklin, Nadiems wife, consistently attends to support him during the proceedings. ‘When I remember Ibu Atika and Bapak Nono, I feel sad sometimes, because they are quite elderly now,’ Franka Franklin said during ROSI on Kompas TV, Thursday (21/5/2026) evening. Nono Anwar Makarim is known as a prominent lawyer and founder of the law firm Makarim & Tiara S. Atika is recognised as an anti-corruption activist and the daughter of Hamid Algadri, an early independence fighter. When asked whether the case against Nadiem would tarnish the reputation of his parents, who are well known in their fields, Franka even believes they would stand with the Prosecutor if Nadiem is indeed guilty. ‘If this were reversed and there is evidence that he is guilty, he might sit at the opposite table (be punished).’ She added, ‘No matter how heavy and painful it may be, if accountability is needed because there is a mistake, they would demand the same,’ she said.
