Nadiem Makarim's Legal Team Reports Alleged Judicial Ethics Violations and Witness Intimidation to Judicial Commission
The legal team representing former Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Minister Nadiem Makarim has presented a detailed report to the Judicial Commission (KY) alleging violations of the code of ethics by the panel of judges handling his case. During an audience with the KY’s examining team on Tuesday, the lawyers outlined claims of judicial misconduct, including the alleged intimidation of witnesses during the trial.
Tabrani Abby, one of Nadiem’s lawyers, stated that the team provided a comprehensive account of the alleged ethical violations. He noted that the KY’s examining team requested additional materials, including full video recordings and transcripts of the court proceedings, to aid their investigation. ‘We have detailed the contents of our report. We listened to the responses from the examining team,’ Abby said, adding that no essential evidence was currently missing from their submission.
Abby expressed hope that the alleged ethical breaches would be substantiated by the facts revealed during the trial. He stated that the final determination rests with the KY’s examining team.
Fellow attorney Zahid Mushafi added that the legal team has also asked the KY to investigate information regarding potential external intervention influencing the panel of judges during the examination and decision-making process. Furthermore, Zahid highlighted that the chief of the judging panel had reportedly been recommended for a six-month non-public service sanction by the KY, but the legal team has yet to receive any update on the follow-up to this recommendation.
Zahid also pointed to a specific procedural failure, alleging that the panel of judges did not inform the defendant of his legal rights after the verdict was read, as required by the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP). He confirmed that the legal team is preparing to file an appeal against the court’s decision.
