The verdict hearing for the alleged corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops, with former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim as the defendant, commenced with a striking detail. The panel of judges revealed that the verdict document for the case totals 1,146 pages, prompting a special mechanism for the reading to ensure efficiency in the courtroom.

Presiding Judge Purwanto S. Abdullah stated that the entire verdict had been compiled in a document thousands of pages thick. “For this verdict, it is more than 1,146 pages,” he said on Tuesday, 30 June 2026.

Before reading the operative part of the verdict, the panel of judges sought approval from the public prosecutor, legal counsel, and the defendant regarding the reading mechanism. The judges proposed not reading out the indictment, witness testimonies, and the defendant’s statements that had already been presented during the trial in order to save time.

Instead, the panel of judges would read in full the legal considerations forming the basis for the decision. “For the legal considerations themselves, there are 122 pages,” he noted.

The proposal was subsequently approved by both the public prosecutor and Nadiem Makarim’s legal team. However, the defence requested that the panel of judges still outline the key facts underpinning the considerations in the verdict. Responding to this request, Purwanto assured that the trial facts had been detailed within the legal considerations according to the elements weighed by the panel of judges.

Nadiem Makarim was previously sentenced to 18 years in prison, a fine of Rp1 billion, subsidiary to 190 days of confinement, and a restitution payment of Rp5.67 trillion, subsidiary to nine years’ imprisonment. In this case, he was charged with corruption causing state losses valued at Rp2.18 trillion. The alleged corruption involved the procurement of information and communication technology-based learning facilities, specifically Chromebook laptops and CDM, for the 2020, 2021, and 2022 fiscal years, which was carried out in a manner inconsistent with procurement planning and principles.
