Nadiem Makarim Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison and Ordered to Pay Rp809 Billion in Education Corruption Case

The Jakarta Corruption Court has sentenced former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, to 10 years in prison. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday (30/6/2026) in a case concerning corruption in the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) within the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. In addition to the prison term, the panel of judges imposed a fine of Rp1 billion, with a subsidiary sentence of 190 days in custody, and ordered Makarim to pay restitution of Rp809 billion, with a subsidiary sentence of five years imprisonment. Makarim’s wife, Franka Franklin, was present in the courtroom for the reading of the verdict. Outside the court, a group of Gojek drivers staged a demonstration in support of the former minister, who founded the ride-hailing company.
