Nadiem Makarim Reveals Hospitalisation for Reinfection Before Being Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison

Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim revealed that he had been hospitalised due to a reinfection shortly before the verdict hearing for the alleged corruption case concerning the procurement of Chromebooks and Chrome Device Management at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court on Tuesday, 30 June 2026. Nadiem made this statement directly to the panel of judges. “Thank you. Although I am ready to attend the trial today, I would like to report that I experienced a reinfection twice and had to be readmitted to hospital. We continue to monitor the recovery process from the surgery, but there were complications. I just wanted to inform you. Thank you,” Nadiem said before the panel of judges.

Upon hearing this, Presiding Judge Purwanto S. Abdullah acknowledged the defendant’s condition and noted that the verdict reading would be lengthy. The judge sought approval from the public prosecutor and the defendant’s legal counsel to read only the essence of the legal considerations. “Today’s verdict reading will take a long time. Therefore, considering the defendant’s health condition, we request approval from the prosecutor, the defendant, and the legal counsel to read the complete verdict but only summarise the legal considerations,” said Judge Purwanto.

Nadiem’s legal counsel, Ari Yusuf Amir, agreed to the mechanism but requested that the facts of the trial still be outlined in the legal considerations. The panel of judges confirmed that all trial facts had been included in the considerations. The Central Jakarta Corruption Court panel of judges then declared Nadiem Makarim legally and convincingly guilty of committing a criminal act of corruption jointly. The court sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
