Nadiem Makarim Faces Verdict in Chromebook Corruption Case Today
The Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta District Court is scheduled to read the verdict in the alleged corruption case concerning the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) for the 2020-2022 fiscal year, with defendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim, on Tuesday (30/6).
Previously, the chief judge Purwanto S. Abdullah stated after a hearing last week that the panel of judges would deliberate and aimed to deliver the verdict on Tuesday, 30 June 2026, citing the need for time to compile the decision due to his own health issues.
In this case, public prosecutors from the Attorney General’s Office have demanded the panel of judges sentence Nadiem to 18 years in prison and a fine of Rp1 billion, subsidiary to 190 days of imprisonment. The former Minister of Education and Culture under President Jokowi is also required to pay restitution of Rp809,597,125,000 and Rp4,871,469,603,758, which represents assets disproportionate to his legitimate income or suspected to originate from corruption. Should the restitution not be paid, it will be replaced with an additional 9 years in prison.
According to the prosecutors, legal facts revealed during the trial proved Nadiem caused state financial losses in the Chromebook and CDM procurement. Nadiem has objected to the demands, describing the situation as a very, very, very disappointing day and stating that words could not explain his feelings.
