Nadiem Makarim Faces 18-Year Prison Sentence Demand in Chromebook Corruption Case
According to reports from Monday (18/5/2026), Nadiem Makarim faces a demand for 18 years in prison, a fine of Rp 1 billion (subsidiary to 190 days of imprisonment), and total restitution of approximately Rp 5.6 trillion (subsidiary to 9 years of imprisonment). Nadiem’s lawyer, Dodi S. Abdulkadir, stated at the Central Jakarta Anti-Corruption Court on Wednesday (13/5) that both the defendant and his legal counsel will submit individual defence statements (pleidoi).
The legal team has been granted three weeks to draft the defence. The presiding judge, Purwanto S. Abdullah, noted that this timeframe aligns with medical recommendations for Nadiem’s recovery following a surgical procedure performed on Wednesday night, following the sentencing hearing. The judge expressed hope that this period would allow the defendant to focus on optimal recovery.
The hearing for the reading of the defence is scheduled for Tuesday, 2 June 2026.
Regarding the prosecution’s demands, Prosecutor Roy Riady stated that the prosecution is convinced Nadiem Anwar Makarim is guilty of participating in corruption. The prosecution is seeking an 18-year prison term, a fine of Rp 1 billion, and restitution totaling Rp 5,681,066,728,758. Prosecutors have requested that Nadiem’s assets be seized and auctioned to cover the restitution; failure to meet the amount would result in an additional 9-year prison term. The prosecution alleges violations of Article 603 in conjunction with Article 18 of the Corruption Law and Article 20(c) of Law No. 1 of 2023 (the New Penal Code).
