JAKARTA - The Public Prosecutors (JPU) have demanded that the defendant in the alleged corruption case regarding the procurement of Chromebook-based laptops, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, be sentenced to 18 years in prison and fined Rp1 billion during the prosecutorial demand reading at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court, Tuesday (13/5/2026).

“(We request the panel of judges) to impose a prison sentence on the Defendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim of 18 years, minus the time the Defendant has been in temporary detention, with an order for the Defendant to be immediately detained in a State Detention Centre,” stated the Public Prosecutor (JPU) while reading the demand.

If the fine is not paid, it will be replaced with imprisonment for 190 days.

“To impose a fine on the Defendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim of Rp1,000,000,000, which must be paid within one month after the court decision gains legal force,” said the prosecutor.

In addition, the prosecutors have demanded supplementary punishment in the form of restitution payments amounting to Rp809,596,125,000 and Rp4,871,469,603,758.

“(The restitution) constitutes the Defendant’s assets that are disproportionate to legitimate income or suspected to originate from the criminal act of corruption,” said the prosecutor.

In their demand, the prosecutors also requested that the evidence in the case remain as stated in the demand letter and that the case costs of Rp10,000 be borne by the defendant.

Nadiem is accused of enriching himself by Rp809 billion, which is said to stem from Google’s investment in Gojek or PT AKAB.

Meanwhile, the defendant Mulyatsyah is said to have received SGD120,000 and USD150,000.

The prosecutors stated that Nadiem abused his authority, thereby making Google the sole controller of ICT procurement, including laptops, in Indonesia’s education technology ecosystem.

The alleged acts were carried out together with three other defendants, namely former technology consultant for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Ibrahim Arief alias Ibam, Mulyatsyah, and former Director of Primary Education at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Sri Wahyuningsih.

For this case, Nadiem and the other defendants are charged with violating Article 2 Paragraph (1) and Article 3 in conjunction with Article 18 of Law No. 31 of 1999 as amended and supplemented by Law No. 20 of 2001 on Amendments to Law No. 31 of 1999 on the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Corruption in conjunction with Article 55 Paragraph (1) first of the Criminal Code.
