Nadiem Makarim Faces 18-Year Prison Demand
Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim has been demanded a prison sentence of 18 years. Prosecutors are convinced that Nadiem is guilty in the corruption case concerning the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM).
“We demand that the panel of judges declare the defendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim has been legally and convincingly proven guilty of committing the criminal act of corruption carried out jointly,” stated prosecutor Roy Riady while reading the indictment at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court, Wednesday (13/5/2026).
“Impose a prison sentence on the defendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim of 18 years,” added the prosecutor.
Nadiem is also demanded to pay a fine of Rp 1 billion or subsidiary 190 days of imprisonment. In addition, prosecutors demand Nadiem pay restitution amounting to Rp 809,596,125,000 (Rp 809 billion) and Rp 4,871,469,603,758 (Rp 4.8 trillion), or a total of Rp 5,681,066,728,758 (Rp 5.6 trillion).
Prosecutors stated that Nadiem’s assets can be confiscated and auctioned to cover the restitution amount. However, if insufficient, it will be replaced with imprisonment of 9 years.
Prosecutors are convinced Nadiem is guilty of violating Article 603 in conjunction with Article 18 of the Corruption Offences Law in conjunction with Article 20 letter c of Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code.
In this case, Nadiem is charged with corruption related to the procurement of Chromebook laptops during his tenure as Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. The project is said to have caused a state loss of Rp 2.1 trillion.
Prosecutors stated that the calculation of state losses of Rp 2.1 trillion comes from the overpricing of Chromebooks amounting to Rp 1,567,888,662,716.74 (Rp 1.5 trillion). Then, the procurement of unnecessary and non-beneficial CDM amounting to USD 44,054,426 or equivalent to approximately Rp 621,387,678,730 (Rp 621 billion).
Besides Nadiem, there are three other defendants in this case. They are Sri Wahyuningsih, former Director of Primary Schools at the Directorate General of Early Childhood Education, Basic Education, and Secondary Education from 2020-2021, Mulyatsyah, former Director of Junior High Schools at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology in 2020, and Ibrahim Arief (IBAM), a consultant at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology during Nadiem’s era.
