Nadiem Has Been Under House Arrest Since Last Night, AG Installs Special Surveillance
Jakarta – Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Mendikbudristek), Nadiem Makarim, has officially begun serving house arrest since Monday evening, 11 May 2026. The Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung) stated that the change in detention status was carried out in accordance with the determination of the Panel of Judges at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court. Head of the Legal Information Centre at Kejagung, Anang Supriatna, said that the Public Prosecutors’ team immediately followed up on the judge’s decision by transferring Nadiem’s detention status from state detention centre to house arrest. “Yes, that’s right, last night the prosecution team implemented the panel of judges’ determination, where Mr NM’s status was changed to house arrest, and it was carried out by us last night,” he stated on Tuesday, 12 May 2026. Although now serving house arrest at his residence in the Kebayoran Baru area, South Jakarta, Kejagung assured that surveillance of Nadiem would remain tight. This includes monitoring using detection devices. In addition, Kejagung is also collaborating with security apparatus to assist in supervising the former Gojek boss during his house arrest period. “Yes, we are also working with security apparatus,” he said. Previously reported, ahead of the prosecution hearing, the Panel of Judges granted the request to change the detention status of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology for the 2019–2024 period from rutan detention to house arrest, effective from Tuesday, 12 May 2026. Although his detention status has changed, there are several conditions imposed on Nadiem, with emphasis that if he violates them, his detention status will be returned to the state detention centre (rutan). The Chief Judge emphasised that there were no other factors for changing Nadiem’s detention status besides his health condition.
