Nadiem Faces 18-Year Prison Demand, Aggravating Factor Disrupts Equitable Education for Children
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim has been demanded a prison sentence of 18 years. Nadiem is deemed legally and convincingly proven guilty of committing the criminal act of corruption in the Chromebook laptop procurement project at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology during the 2020-2022 period.
This was stated by the public prosecutors’ team (JPU) when reading out the indictment against Nadiem on Wednesday (13/5/2026) at the Central Jakarta District Court.
“The prosecutors demand that the panel of judges impose a prison sentence on the defendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim, therefore, with a prison sentence of 18 years minus the period the defendant has been in detention,” said the JPU during the trial.
The JPU also demands that the judges impose a fine on Nadiem Makarim of Rp1 billion, subsidiary 190 days’ imprisonment.
Furthermore, Nadiem faces additional demands for criminal penalties to repay compensation amounting to Rp809.59 billion and Rp4.87 trillion, which constitutes wealth disproportionate to legitimate income or suspected to originate from corrupt criminal acts.
“If the defendant does not pay the compensation, it shall be replaced with a prison sentence of nine years,” stated the JPU.
