Nabire Police to Involve Digital Forensics Expert in Junior High School Student Murder Investigation

Nabire Police are involving a digital forensics expert to extract data from three mobile phones as part of the investigation into the murder of a junior high school student in Nabire Regency, Papua Tengah.

Nabire Police Chief AKBP Samuel Dominggus Tatiratu said on Thursday that the digital extraction of the evidence is scheduled to take place on 7 August 2026 in Jayapura.

“The extraction and Cellebrite examination of the evidence, consisting of three mobile phones — two belonging to the victim and one belonging to the juvenile in conflict with the law (ABH) — is scheduled for tomorrow in Jayapura,” he said.

In addition to examining the mobile phones, investigators have also scheduled examinations of a CCTV footage expert and the doctor who performed the post-mortem examination on the victim.

According to him, investigators will also conduct a psychological assessment of the juvenile on the same day as part of the investigation stages in accordance with applicable regulations.

He said that once all expert examinations are completed, investigators will hold another case conference to determine the schedule for the crime scene reconstruction, in coordination with the victim’s family’s legal counsel.

He explained that investigators have so far elevated the case status from inquiry to investigation, named AWS as a suspect, and sent the Notice of Commencement of Investigation (SPDP) to the Nabire Prosecutor’s Office.

“We are handling this case professionally, transparently, and in accordance with National Police SOPs, regardless of the perpetrator’s family background,” he said.

He added that investigators are targeting the first-stage case file to be transferred to the Nabire Prosecutor’s Office next week once all investigative requirements are complete.

He also urged the public not to be easily influenced by unverified information and to fully entrust the handling of the case to law enforcement officials.
