Myth or Fact: Do Iridium Spark Plugs Improve Fuel Efficiency?
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Iridium spark plugs are inherently of higher quality compared to conventional or nickel-based spark plugs.
Given this, many believe that using iridium spark plugs not only optimises engine performance but also improves fuel efficiency.
So, is this belief accurate or merely a perception?
In response, Diko Oktaviano, Technical Support at PT Niterra Mobility Indonesia, the Indonesian manufacturer of NGK spark plugs, provided a brief explanation.
“It’s not about fuel savings, but improved efficiency. Why? Because iridium spark plugs have a needle-like shape and produce a more focused spark,” Diko told KOMPAS.com some time ago.
Superior materials and a specially designed structure enable iridium spark plugs to generate faster and stronger sparks compared to standard ones.
This results in positive effects, such as maintaining a cleaner combustion chamber with minimal residue.
Consequently, the engine produces optimal power, ensuring fuel is not wasted and efficiency is maintained.
Furthermore, Diko explained that the primary advantage of iridium spark plugs is their ability to create consistent sparks, leading to more efficient combustion than conventional or nickel spark plugs.
“Iridium spark plugs have a smaller electrode diameter, which enhances combustion efficiency as the spark spreads more quickly than in nickel spark plugs,” he added.
