An unidentified projectile struck a container ship off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the container ship captain had confirmed the vessel sustained damage from an alleged but unidentified projectile. The extent of damage remains unknown, but all crew members were reported safe.

The incident occurred 25 nautical miles (29 miles) north-west of the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. UKMTO urged vessels transiting the region to exercise caution, and authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The attack comes amid heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has asserted they maintain “full control” of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway serving as one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. The strait, measuring less than 48 kilometres wide at its narrowest point, is bordered by Iran on one side and Oman on the other.

At least 10 oil tankers in or near the strait have been struck, targeted, or reported attacked between 1-10 March. The escalation prompted US President Donald Trump to warn Iran on Tuesday of unprecedented military consequences should it attempt to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz, following Tehran’s pledge that no Gulf oil would transit the critical waterway.
