Mystery Package Mistaken for Baby's Corpse at Temple Turns Out to be Cat Carcass
Residents near Manik Keling Temple, in the Pemebetan area of Kapal Village, Mengwi District, Badung Regency, Bali, were initially shocked. This followed the discovery of a mysterious package that was initially suspected to contain the body of a baby.
However, after the package, wrapped in gauze, was opened by officials and residents, the mystery was finally solved. The contents turned out not to be a human body, but the carcass of a cat.
A video of the discovery of the package went viral and sparked various reactions on social media. The incident occurred on Monday morning (June 1, 2026). Based on the information gathered, the discovery of the suspicious package was first noticed by the local temple caretaker, I Made Raka Suparta (58).
That day, around 6:00 a.m., Made Raka came to Manik Keling Temple to carry out his routine cleaning. After cleaning, he went home. The mystery began when Made Raka returned to the temple three hours later to serve residents who wanted to pray.
As he stepped into the middle area of the temple, his gaze fell on the object. The object was wrapped in white cloth with a shape and binding that strongly resembled a baby’s corpse in a shroud. The package was simply placed in front of one of the buildings in the middle courtyard.
Suspecting something was amiss, Made Raka did not dare to touch it directly. He immediately contacted another resident named I Kadek Aan, who then reported it to the police.
The information about the discovery of the “package resembling a baby’s shroud” quickly spread on social media. A video recording the dramatic moment inside the temple went viral and sparked concern and curiosity among netizens. Residents around the area also flocked to the location out of curiosity.
To confirm the contents of the package, officials, along with traditional leaders, temple caretakers, and residents at the location, agreed to carefully open the gauze package. “After it was opened, it turned out to contain the carcass of a cat,” said the Head of Mengwi Police, Kompol Anak Agung Gede Rai Darmayasa, on Thursday (June 4, 2026).
The tension immediately eased after it was discovered that the package was not a baby, but an animal carcass that had been deliberately wrapped to resemble a shroud by an unidentified person.
Upon discovering this, the temple officials and administrators of Manik Keling Temple stated that they accepted the incident with sincerity. “They consider this a misunderstanding and decided not to prolong the matter or take legal action. The situation is now conducive,” Darmayasa concluded.
