Mystery of Viral Armed Motorcyclist in Dongkelan, Bantul

Police are still conducting an investigation to uncover the identity of a mysterious man who was seen tucking an object believed to be a pistol into his trousers while riding pillion on a motorcycle at the Dongkelan crossroads in Sewon, Bantul.

The man became viral on social media after being posted on the Instagram account @merapi_uncover.

“Found this, admin, earlier today at 10.30 near the Dongkelan police post. Not sure if it’s a lighter pistol or a real one (27/8/2026),” read the caption on the @merapi_uncover post, as seen by detikJogja on Friday (28/8/2026).

The post was then responded to by the Bantul Police account.

“Hello friends of the Indonesian National Police, thank you for the information. Regarding this matter, we will immediately conduct an investigation to identify the owner and determine what the object being carried is,” wrote Bantul Police.

“If there is any additional information regarding this matter, you can come directly to Bantul Police or contact call centre 110,” it continued.

By yesterday afternoon, the post had been liked by 8,297 netizens, received 1,317 comments, and was reposted 143 times. The post was also shared 950 times.

Sewon Police Chief AKP Sutrisno acknowledged that he was aware of the information.

“We are still in the process of investigating to verify the location and the person involved,” said Sutrisno when contacted by detikJogja on Friday (28/8).

Meanwhile, Bantul Police Criminal Investigation Unit Head AKP Subihan Afuan Ardhi said that the Sewon Police Criminal Investigation Unit and the Bantul Police Criminal Investigation Unit were carrying out the investigation.

“The Sewon Police have already begun the investigation, and we are also providing backup,” Subihan told detikJogja.
