Mystery of Iran's 'Jellyfish' Drone Formation

A United States F-15 fighter jet pilot, rescued after being shot down over Iran in April 2026, has provided startling testimony regarding Iranian drones. He reported seeing the drones form a shape resembling a jellyfish.

The pilot witnessed the jellyfish formation moments before ejecting from his jet. The account, disclosed by four sources familiar with the matter, was relayed to US intelligence officials during a briefing following the incident. It immediately ignited a fierce debate within the US intelligence community, which remains unresolved.

If the pilot truly saw what he described—a formation of drones moving in unison through the air—it would represent a significant leap in Iranian drone capabilities. According to one source, the pilot described several drones interconnected and moving in sync, with smaller drones positioned beneath larger ones like tentacles. The pilot reportedly added that it was “truly like something alien.” Another source told CNN that the pilot described witnessing a “minefield of drones” in the sky.

The exact cause of the F-15 crash on Iranian soil is still under investigation. However, two sources indicated that initial reports suggest the drone formation may have enabled Iran to shoot down the American jet. The incident marked the first time a US fighter jet has crashed inside Iran during the conflict. The F-15 carried two crew members, a pilot and a weapons systems officer, both of whom were successfully rescued in a US special forces operation. It remains unclear whether the weapons systems officer also observed the drone formation.
