Mystery Figure at Khamenei's Funeral Identified as Grandson, Not Son Mojtaba

The identity of a mysterious masked man seen at the funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been revealed, ending widespread speculation that he was Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei. Iranian media outlet Iran International identified the man in the black mask and hat, who was standing in the front row during the funeral prayers, as Mohammad Javad Khamenei, the eldest grandson of the late Ayatollah. According to the report, Mohammad Javad is the son of Mostafa Khamenei, Ayatollah Khamenei’s eldest son. He reportedly suffered severe facial burns and other serious injuries during the US and Israeli airstrike on 28 February that killed Ayatollah Khamenei, prompting him to cover his face with a black mask at his grandfather’s funeral. Speculation regarding the condition of Mojtaba Khamenei has also persisted since the attack. The New York Post, citing US intelligence assessments, reported that Mojtaba was seriously wounded and suffered severe physical disabilities. He was reportedly in the same residence as his father during the airstrike but survived because he was in a different room. Iran’s ambassador to Cyprus, Alireza Salarian, stated that Mojtaba sustained injuries to his leg, hand, and arm and was receiving hospital treatment. Mojtaba has not appeared in public or delivered any speeches since the attack, and according to Australian media reports, he has been communicating with military commanders and senior clerics through handwritten messages.
