A reckless act by a hijab-wearing woman who plunged into the sea at Parangtritis Beach, Bantul, caused a commotion. The mysterious woman eventually fled after being evacuated. The incident occurred on Thursday (9/7/2026) afternoon. The SAR team at the location had been monitoring the woman’s movements before she walked into the sea. “Officers who noticed a woman walking too far out to sea approached and persuaded her to return to land,” said M. Arif Nugraha, Coordinator of Jogo Segoro for the Parangtritis-Depok Region, when contacted by reporters on Thursday (9/7). After being persuaded, the woman finally agreed to walk back to the shore. She was then taken to the Parangtritis SAR Post. However, the woman could not yet be engaged in communication. The SAR team also struggled to trace her identity because her bag had been swept away by the waves. “From initial indications and her psychological condition during the evacuation, the individual is suspected to have been suffering from severe depression,” he said. By the afternoon, the woman reportedly left the SAR post. Officers were unable to send her home because they could not communicate with her. “The individual left the post without saying goodbye,” said Sektiaji Bagus, Coordinator of the Satlinmas Rescue Istimewa Region III for Parangtritis-Depok Beach, when contacted by detikJogja on Friday (10/7). “Yesterday, she was asked questions but her answers were incoherent. When asked for her home address, she answered ‘the south coast’, which is why we could not send her home yesterday,” he continued. The woman is suspected to have been suffering from depression. She also reportedly became hysterical when she saw an ambulance passing by. “Yesterday, the woman saw an ambulance passing and then ran towards the sea. Perhaps she has a trauma related to ambulances or something; we are not entirely sure. She was calmed down and willingly taken to the post,” he explained. As of now, the condition and whereabouts of the hijab-wearing woman remain unknown.
