Mysterious Woman's Reckless Act into Parangtritis Sea Causes Uproar

A veiled woman’s desperate act of plunging herself into the sea at Parangtritis Beach in Bantul caused a stir. The mysterious woman eventually fled after briefly being evacuated.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon (9/7/2026). The SAR team on site monitored the woman’s movements before she walked out to sea.
“Officers who noticed a woman walking too far out to sea approached and persuaded her to return to shore,” said M. Arif Nugraha, Coordinator of Jogo Segoro for the Parangtritis-Depok area, when contacted by journalists on Thursday (9/7).
After being successfully persuaded, the woman finally agreed to walk back towards the shore. She was then taken to the Parangtritis SAR post.
However, the woman could not be engaged in communication. The SAR team also had difficulty identifying her because her bag had been swept away by the waves.
“From the initial indications and her psychological condition when evacuated, she is suspected to be suffering from severe depression,” he said.
By the evening, the woman was said to have left the SAR post. Officers could not return her home because they were unable to communicate with her.
“She left the post without saying goodbye,” said Sektiaji Bagus, Coordinator of the SAR Satlinmas Istimewa Rescue Region III Parangtritis-Depok Beach, when contacted by detikJogja on Friday (10/7).
“Yesterday she was questioned but her answers did not make sense. When asked for her home address, she replied ‘the southern beach’, which is why we could not return her home yesterday,” he continued.
The woman is suspected to be suffering from depression. She also became hysterical upon seeing an ambulance pass by.
“Yesterday, when the woman saw an ambulance passing by, she ran towards the sea. Perhaps she has a trauma related to ambulances or something — we don’t really know. She was calmed down and agreed to go to the post,” he explained.
To this day, the condition and whereabouts of the veiled woman remain unknown.
