Mysterious Shooting at Freeport's Grasberg Mine Leaves One Dead
PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) has issued a statement regarding a shooting incident perpetrated by an unknown assailant targeting one of the company’s employees.
VP Corporate Communications of PT Freeport Indonesia Katri Krisnati confirmed that the incident occurred on Wednesday, 11 March 2026, at approximately 8:30 am WIT in the Grasberg open-pit mining area.
“PT Freeport Indonesia confirms that a shooting by an unknown person occurred on Wednesday, 11 March 2026, at approximately 8:30 am WIT in the Grasberg open-pit mining area,” Katri told CNBC Indonesia on Wednesday (11/3/2026).
Katri further stated that PTFI’s management expresses deep condolences over the death of one employee named Simson Mulia, aged 48, who lost his life in the incident.
“We extend our deepest sympathies and offer support to the bereaved family,” Katri said.
According to Katri, PTFI is currently coordinating with government security authorities regarding the matter. The safety and security of all employees and all parties in the operational area remain PTFI’s highest priority.
