Mysterious phone call

On July 13, 2001, around 1:30 p.m., I received a call on my
cellular phone from a person (Supeno?) claiming to be an adjutant
commissioner of the Jakarta Police. His mobile phone number is
0818687646.

I was shocked to receive such a call on my cellular phone.
When asked where he got my number from, he said he had
informants in my office.

He called to offer my company three invitations, at Rp 500,000
each, for a charity program where sembako (the nine basic
commodities) will be distributed by the Jakarta Police on July
29, 2001, at Sahid Jaya Hotel.

From the way he spoke, I felt he was urging me to accept his
offer and donate Rp 1.5 million for the three invitations. When I
requested that he fax me a letter which I can put forward to my
boss, he said didn't mind my unwillingness to donate and would
instead send "his man" to see my boss.

When I telephoned the public service department of Jakarta
Police, I was told by Brig. D. Gusti that there was no such
charity program.

The Jakarta Police chief has since called on his subordinates
to be vigilant of such modi operandi. The general public is also
warned of such tricks that can tarnish the image of the police.
