Mysterious Green Peafowl Found by Bantul Resident

The Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) of Yogyakarta has evacuated a green peafowl found by residents of Pajangan, Bantul, near a chicken coop. Here is what it looks like.

The bird is a male green peafowl, or Pavo muticus. The protected animal was found in a weakened state on Thursday (30 July).

However, its condition began to improve once BKSDA evacuated it. From photographs received by detikJogja, the bird can be seen standing upright. It appears greenish, with predominantly blue colouring on its back.

Desy Rachmawati, BKSDA Yogyakarta’s public relations officer, said there is as yet no information regarding the bird’s origins. It is suspected to be a wild bird that strayed into a residential area.

“To date, there is no information indicating that the peafowl is a privately owned animal or one released by members of the public. BKSDA Yogyakarta is therefore continuing observation and further examination to ascertain the animal’s condition,” she said when contacted by detikJogja on Monday (3 August 2026).

She said the bird was first discovered by residents near a chicken coop. When found, it was in a weakened state until residents eventually caught it.

“Concerned about its condition, residents then secured the peafowl and provided it with food and water,” she said.

The bird was subsequently evacuated by BKSDA on Saturday (1 August). The green peafowl is currently being held at the Bunder Wildlife Protection Unit (UPS).
