Mysterious Green Peafowl Found by Bantul Resident

The Yogyakarta Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) has evacuated a green peafowl found by a resident of Pajangan, Bantul, near a chicken coop. The bird is a male green peafowl, or Pavo Muticus, a protected species. It was discovered in a weakened state on Thursday (30/7). However, by the time the BKSDA evacuated it, its condition had begun to improve. Photographs show the bird standing upright, displaying greenish plumage with a dominant blue colour on its back. BKSDA Yogyakarta spokesperson Desy Rachmawati stated there is no information yet regarding the bird’s origin. It is suspected to be a wild bird that entered the residential area. ‘So far, there is no information indicating that the peafowl is a pet or a released animal. Therefore, BKSDA Yogyakarta is continuing observation and further examination to ascertain its condition,’ she said. She explained that the bird was first found by a resident near a chicken coop. Due to its weakened state, the resident captured it and provided food and water. The bird was subsequently evacuated by BKSDA on Saturday (1/8) and is currently housed at the Bunder Animal Protection Unit (UPS).
