Mysterious Fires in Sleman Home Trigger Eccentric Shaman Activity
Persistent mysterious fires plaguing residents of Padukuhan Mriyan X, Margomulyo, Seyegan, Sleman, remain unresolved. The ongoing incidents have attracted shamans engaging in peculiar activities.
The homeowner, Mutfianah, known as Fia, described her home as a tourist attraction due to the constant influx of visitors. ‘Shamans keep coming, especially at night—it’s like a tourist spot, so crowded. There’s even an eccentric shaman from Godean claiming to retrieve heirlooms,’ Fia said during an interview at her residence on Thursday, 28 May 2026.
She reported that items in her house have been burning since early Saturday, 23 May. By Wednesday, 27 May, the fires had occurred over 30 times at different locations. ‘A total of 39 fires across 34 distinct spots—furniture, clothing, mats, flammable items. It’s odd that the upper parts burn while the lower sections remain untouched,’ she explained.
Fia mentioned she repaired her septic tank following advice from the Yogyakarta Special Region Police Gegana team, who suspected a methane gas leak. However, the fires persisted. ‘They said it would just burn off residual gas from underground. Methane dissipation could take weeks or months,’ she added.
Fires continued to erupt on Wednesday, including in previously unaffected rooms, burning towels. Consequently, Fia and her family have temporarily relocated, though the property—a chicken slaughterhouse—is guarded nightly.
The first incident occurred on Saturday, 23 May at 00:00 WIB, when flames ignited cloth and spread to the door frame. Subsequent fires appeared in different locations, destroying more belongings. Fia noted no explosions or sparks: ‘There were no bangs or sparks—it just suddenly caught fire,’ she told reporters on Sunday, 24 May.
