SINGAPORE (AFP): The chairman of Myanmar's ruling junta, Than
Shwe, arrived here yesterday for a four-day official visit aimed
at boosting economic ties with Singapore.
Than Shwe's trip, at the invitation of Singapore Premier Goh
Chok Tong, is his first to the city state since he became head of
the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) in April
1992.
His 44-member delegation includes a senior general in the
council, Khin Nyunt, and four ministers who will have separate
meetings with their Singapore counterparts.
Before his visit here, Than Shwe was in Indonesia for a four-
day official visit -- his first to an ASEAN country. Singapore is
a leading investor in Myanmar, with investments of more than
S$400 million (US$285.7 million).
