Myanmar uses Thai satellite
BANGKOK (AP): Myanmar is dumping Hong Kong's Asiasat-1
satellite for its local communications system and replacing it
with ThaiCom-3 from Shinawatra of Thailand, the state-run New
Light of Myanmar reported yesterday.
Four Shinawatra engineers are in Myanmar installing antennas
and other equipment necessary for the military government to
lease transponder space on ThaiCom-3 for government-run Myanmar
Post and Telecommunications.
A hub station is being installed at Toegyaunggalay.
Access to satellite television broadcast and other modern
communications hardware and software is strictly controlled by
Myanmar's military government. A license is required to own a
satellite dish.
Owning a fax machine or satellite dish without government
permission is punishable by prison terms.
