Myanmar President Calls for Unity Between New Government and People
Bangkok (ANTARA) - Myanmar’s President Min Aung Hlaing, in his inauguration speech on Friday, called for unity between the newly democratically elected government and the people in carrying out the task of strengthening the multi-party democracy system in the country. “After proceeding step by step on the path back to the multi-party democracy system within the framework of the constitutional provisions regarding the state of emergency, we have successfully prepared and held a fair and proper multi-party democratic election,” said Min Aung Hlaing. Now, said President Aung Hlaing, Myanmar is moving towards a better future. “We, the people and the government, are determined to walk together and overcome all difficulties, whether from global or domestic issues,” he added. The first general election since 2020 in Myanmar was held in three stages from December 2025 to January 2026, after nearly five years of military government under a state of emergency imposed due to national security threats in February 2021. The election was won by the Union Solidarity and Development Party—which previously led Myanmar’s government from 2011 to 2015—with senior general Min Aung Hlaing as the presidential candidate. Min Aung Hlaing won the parliamentary vote on 3 April, securing 429 votes out of a total of 500 available votes.
