Myanmar may soon go on the web

YANGON (AFP): Myanmar is poised to take another small step
into the information age with the launch of a public Internet
access service, a government official said.

Businesses will be given priority when the new service is up
and running, officials said.

Myanmar currently allows limited access to electronic mail but
the service is largely confined to businesspeople and foreign
embassies.

Opponents of the military government are likely to see any
hopes of spreading their message outside the country dashed,
because as sole service provider, the state will control access
to the web.
