YANGON (AP): A faction of about 100 rebels from an ethnic
insurgent army made peace with the military regime on Friday in a
ceremony attended by one of the senior ruling generals.
The fighters have broken away from the Karenni National
Progressive Party, a group of several thousand men operating
along Myanmar's rugged border with Thailand.
Lt. Gen. Khin Nyunt, the powerful head of military
intelligence, attended the peace ceremony in Loikaw, 450
kilometers northeast of Yangon.
Khin Nyunt is the architect of cease-fires made between the
military, which has ruled Myanmar, also known as Burma, since
1962, and several rebel groups over the past decade. Khin Nyunt
said that the faction making peace on Friday was the 18th to do
so.
