Myanmar frees 9 NLD members
MYANMAR: Military-ruled Myanmar freed nine supporters of detained
democracy figurehead Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday, a week after
they were arrested while handing out leaflets on human rights.
The young men, who said they had not been ill-treated despite
spending most of their detention in Yangon's notorious Insein
Prison, made their protest on May 30, the first anniversary of
Suu Kyi's arrest.
"I distributed the leaflets because I wanted the general
public to know the human rights that they deserve," Myint Oo told
reporters after the group was freed.
The nine, all members of Suu Kyi's National League for
Democracy (NLD), were picked up at three busy public areas in the
capital where they had been handing out leaflets citing a UN
human rights declaration. --Reuters
