Myanmar chief cites media 'lies'

YANGON (AP): A senior general in Myanmar's military government
has accused Western powers of trying to discredit the country by
spreading lies through the news media.

Lt. Gen. Khin Nyunt, the powerful head of military
intelligence, accused what he called "neocolonialist countries"
of "attempting to dominate and control Myanmar."

Khin Nyunt, one of the top four generals of the ruling State
Peace and Development Council, spoke Monday to open a conference
of the Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association and urged them
to instill patriotism in the public.

Khin Nyunt accused hostile nations of "disseminating
fabricated information and false accusations, through their own
media, orchestrated with their lackeys in the country, to
discredit and create false impressions of the country".
