Muzani to Fly to Iran Tonight Accompanied by Clerics
People’s Consultative Assembly Speaker Ahmad Muzani has stated that his visit with Foreign Minister Sugiono to the funeral procession of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will also be accompanied by a number of clerics. He said the delegation would depart from Jakarta for Iran on Thursday evening, 9 July 2026, and is expected to arrive on Friday, 10 July, around 6.00 a.m. local time. “The composition includes myself, the Foreign Minister, and several clerics. But I do not know their names yet,” Muzani said after visiting the leadership of the Constitutional Court on Wednesday, 8 July 2026. He added that the Indonesian delegation is not planning to stay overnight in the Persian nation. The group will complete its activities, including meeting with Iranian authorities, within a single night. Upon arrival in Mashhad, Iran, on Friday morning, the activities will proceed directly to pay respects at the tomb of Ali Khamenei and to meet with Iran’s Foreign Minister and Parliament Speaker. “After that, we will return directly to Jakarta,” said the Gerindra Party politician. Muzani’s assignment to the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has come under scrutiny because he was directly dispatched by President Prabowo Subianto, despite the president being unable to order the MPR Speaker as their positions are equal. Constitutional law lecturer from Mulawarman University, Herdiansyah Hamzah, said President Prabowo Subianto’s decision to dispatch or order Muzani demonstrates a lack of understanding of the interrelations between state institutions. According to him, although Muzani is a cadre of the Gerindra Party led by Prabowo, Prabowo must be able to separate assignments that can be given to his cadres within the framework of state procedures. Herdiansyah said the party must eliminate the culture of power relations. “This is a mistaken decision,” Herdiansyah said. After widespread public questioning, Muzani claimed his position in the agenda is as an official envoy representing the country. “I was asked to depart representing the Indonesian nation as a presidential envoy,” Muzani said. He also claimed to understand the position of the MPR in relation to executive power. However, in this context, he said the president has special authority to assign someone to represent the country in global forums. “The head of state has the authority to decide who is deemed fit to represent the country,” he said.
