MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani attended the funeral prayers for Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, Try Sutrisno. Muzani revealed Try Sutrisno’s desire for a fifth amendment to the 1945 Constitution whilst he was still alive.

“He spoke to us during Eid last year, expressing his wish that before passing away there would be a fifth amendment to the 1945 Constitution, and he wanted it done before he departed. I took note of this message and mandate from him to us as MPR leaders at that time,” Muzani told journalists at the Sunda Kelapa Grand Mosque in Central Jakarta on Monday, 2 March 2026.

Muzani stated that Try had requested the amendment be carried out to maintain national unity. The amendment was also intended to promote better state continuity. “He wanted the amendment to be done to maintain unity, to preserve togetherness and ensure Indonesia’s better future,” he said.

Muzani noted that Try Sutrisno’s message continues to be studied in depth. He also remembered Try Sutrisno as an individual who dedicated his thoughts and efforts to the nation’s interests until his death. “What the late Vice President thought about, the People’s Consultative Assembly continues to do, to learn and conduct further studies. So all his thoughts, energy, and time were devoted to the nation’s interests until the end of his life,” he said.

Try Sutrisno passed away on the morning of 2 March at the RSPAD Gatot Subroto Hospital. Previously, Try Sutrisno had been hospitalised at RSPAD since 16 February.

Try Sutrisno’s body was laid to rest at a funeral home on Purwakarta Street Number 6 RT 08 RW 05, Menteng, Central Jakarta. The body was then given funeral prayers at the Sunda Kelapa Grand Mosque, Central Jakarta, before being buried at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta.

Try Sutrisno served as Indonesia’s sixth Vice President from 1993 to 1998, serving alongside President Suharto. He was born in Surabaya in 1935.

Try was one of Indonesia’s Vice Presidents with a military background. He graduated from the Army Engineer Academy in 1959.

During his military career, Try served as Chief of the Army General Staff from 1986 to 1988 and as Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces from 1988 to 1993.

In 1961, Try married Tuti Sutiawati and had seven children: four sons and three daughters.
