Jakarta, Kompas.com - Ahmad Muzani, the speaker of Indonesia’s MPR and simultaneously the chairman of the Honorary Board of the Gerindra Party, said Indonesia could decide to withdraw from membership of the Board of Peace (BoP) at any time. He noted that this had been stated several times by President Prabowo Subianto following the outbreak of fighting in the Middle East. ‘For Indonesia, joining and leaving the BoP is something that could happen, as the President has mentioned several times. We could leave at any time,’ Muzani said at the Presidential Palace Complex, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (4 March 2026).

The Board of Peace is part of efforts to accelerate the process of Palestinian independence and development, reconstruction, and rehabilitation.

Nevertheless, the decision to exit or remain a member of the BoP must be based on mutual agreement. ‘But again, it must be by mutual agreement,’ he added.

Former Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said that President Prabowo is weighing and ready to evaluate Indonesia’s membership in the Board of Peace following the Israeli and United States attack on Iran since the weekend. Wirajuda explained that the Head of State also discussed the BoP’s fate after those attacks, since such strikes could undermine the mandate the BoP has prepared.

‘Iya (the President has stated readiness to evaluate). Given these latest developments, it must be evaluated,’ said the former foreign minister after a 3.5-hour meeting on Tuesday.

The option to exit from membership was even discussed if the Board of Peace does not carry out its mandate. ‘The discussions covered that the ongoing war could undermine BoP’s chances of success; the President said we will assess to what extent BoP will continue to perform its mandate. If not, we will exit; that is very clear,’ Wirajuda explained.

Meanwhile, the Middle East war has intensified after Iran was targeted by Israeli and US strikes on Saturday morning local time. The attacks followed nuclear talks between the US and Iran in Geneva, Switzerland, which had stalled. Israel was the first to confirm it had officially attacked Iran. Iran retaliated by firing missiles at locations linked to US military operations. Some of the targeted US bases include Al Udeid in Qatar, Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait, Al-Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, and the Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain.
