A trivial matter involving mutual mockery between students escalated into a brawl spanning from the Tiban area to the Base Camp Roundabout in Batam, Riau Islands. The disturbance, which occurred on Wednesday night (9/9/2026), involved several students from various schools in the region.

Responding to the incident, the Sekupang Police Station acted swiftly by summoning seven students suspected of involvement to the Sekupang Police Headquarters on Thursday (10/9/2026). The students underwent a guidance process accompanied by their respective parents and representatives from their schools.

The Chief of Sekupang Police, Commissioner Hippal Tua Sirait, explained that the brawl was not triggered by any major issue. According to him, the commotion began when several students mocked each other while passing one another on the road.

“The cause was merely a trivial matter. It is typical for teenagers, whose emotions are still unstable,” said Hippal on Friday (11/9/2026).

He added that the dispute, which was initially individual in nature, widened after each party involved their respective school groups or gangs. These students then gathered and arranged a meeting that ultimately erupted into brawls at several locations, ranging from the Tiban area to the Base Camp Roundabout.

The police chose to prioritise disciplinary measures given that the perpetrators are still students and minors. Nevertheless, the police issued a stern warning to ensure such actions do not recur.

“We have provided guidance and requested that both the parents and the children sign a written statement of commitment,” the Police Chief emphasised.

The police believe that the role of parents is key to preventing the recurrence of brawls. Supervision of children’s activities, especially at night, needs to be tightened. The Sekupang Police also urged parents not to provide motorcycles to their children for use at night without supervision.

Furthermore, the Sekupang Police will strengthen coordination with schools to provide early detection of potential friction between students that could trigger collective violence.
