Mutual Fund Investors on the Rise, OJK Urges More Massive Market Expansion
Mutual funds represent an easily accessible and affordable investment instrument that can benefit the public if undertaken regularly. Currently, the number of mutual fund investors continues to rise, but it is still relatively small compared to the total productive-age population in Indonesia.
The potential for mutual funds in the local market remains very significant. Out of a population of 288 million, only 7 per cent have invested. Investment is crucial for the public to preserve the value of money against inflation and as protection for daily life.
According to Evie Sulistyani, Head of the Directorate of Supervision for Investment Management 2 and Regional Capital Markets OJK, the number of mutual fund investors is continuously increasing. However, the figure is still relatively small compared to the total productive-age population in Indonesia.
This increase in the number of investors indicates that there is still very open room for growth in public participation in investments. Therefore, efforts are needed to enhance public literacy and trust, while strengthening the investment ecosystem to develop in a balanced and sustainable manner.
βThe Planned and Periodic Investment (PINTAR) Mutual Fund programme is one of the strategic initiatives to bridge that vast potential with broader public participation,β said Evie at the OJK West Java Regional Office recently.
Evie hopes that this programme can expand investment access for the public and cultivate a disciplined, long-term oriented investment culture. According to her, many members of the public are still not exposed to and understand investments, including mutual funds.
The Indonesia Mutual Fund Managers Association (APRDI), in collaboration with the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and Self Regulatory Organisation (SRO), continues to strive to promote increased literacy and inclusion in mutual funds among the public.
One of these efforts is through the APRDI Mutual Fund Socialisation and Education (SOSEDU) programme 2026, which begins with the Road to Mutual Fund Week activities in several cities in Indonesia, including Bandung. The launch of the PINTAR programme will take place on 27 April in Jakarta.
