The dining room set from the film, which was shot in Semarang last year, serves as the backdrop for the Matilah Kau Mati music video. The visual of the dining room was featured in the video’s teaser poster to symbolise the wound of a family of a 1998 activist kidnapping victim, who are still waiting for news of a loved one who has not returned home for a long time.

“The dining table is one of the important spaces in the story of Laut Bercerita. That is why the dining table also appears as the main setting in the music video, and we present it as a teaser poster. There is silence, but on the other hand, there was once warmth from the Wibisana family; there was a father, mother, older sibling and younger sibling who loved each other, and that empty dining table is waiting for news of someone who has long not returned home,” said Leila S. Chudori, author of the novel Laut Bercerita, on Monday (24/8/2026).

The grief of waiting without certainty is opened through a dialogue by the character Asmara Jati (played by Yunita Siregar), who questions the whereabouts of her missing older brother. According to Yunita Siregar, the character Asmara in the feature film directed by Yosep Anggi Noen will present a resilient character who continues to nurture her memories of her older brother, Biru Laut (Reza Rahadian).

“Although waiting without certainty is heavy, surrendering to memory is the truest form of loss,” said Yunita.

On the other hand, through the film’s important set, director Khozy Rizal offers an idea about life after death from the character Biru Laut, who rises once more before dying to look at the silent objects around him. “I was inspired by the novel, how Laut tells his story. At the same time, I also took elements from the song, of course, the short film, and the feature film Laut Bercerita,” said the director and scriptwriter of the Matilah Kau Mati music video.

The music video for the theme song of the film Laut Bercerita was produced through a collaboration between the band Efek Rumah Kaca and the young musician Angan Senja, also known as Knogg. Knogg, the son of Efek Rumah Kaca vocalist Cholil Mahmud, who studied music at Oberlin in the United States, also contributed his skills in playing musical instruments, particularly the trumpet, in addition to serving as producer while creating the song’s musical arrangement.

“There (at Oberlin), there is a focus, there are majors, but the majors are like arts majors, visual arts, instrumental music, vocal music, dance, technical theatre, theatre. There, I actually did not study music production, but I studied trumpet, so I play the trumpet,” said Knogg.

With a deep academic background in music, Knogg understands various approaches to musical arrangement because he studied music theory from the Baroque era of Johann Sebastian Bach to the contemporary and modern eras.

The collaboration can be seen in the Matilah Kau Mati music video, whose launch precedes the scheduled release of the feature film version in Indonesian cinemas on 29 October 2026.
