'Murder suspect still free'

JAKARTA (JP): A Councilor asked yesterday why the main suspect in the murder of a businessman in North Jakarta three years ago had not been tried.

Sugiat Achmad of Commission A for Legal Affairs said Eng San was the main suspect in the murder of Nyo Beng Seng and should be tried soon.

"If Eng San is not prosecuted it will damage the reputation of law enforcers. Why has a three-year-old case yet to be settled?" he asked.

Nyo Beng Seng, alias Suyadi Dharmansyah, owner of Irama Tara recording company, was stabbed to death in his second wife's mansion in Pluit, North Jakarta, in April 1994.

Three men were jailed over the murder. Agiono and Atok have been serving 20 year and 15 year jail terms since last August.

Another accomplice, Tjen Piu, got nine years for escorting Agiono and Atok to the mansion. He was sentenced last October.

Sugiat said Eng San initiated the murder. Police assumed business competition was his motive. Beng Seng owned several Jakarta nightclubs. (sur)
