Multiparty system unsuitable

Multiparty system unsuitable

From Rakyat Merdeka

The presence of many political parties in Indonesia has not
been able to solve difficulties. The multiparty model is in fact
more suitable to the parliamentary system like those in European
countries. Conversely, it's more appropriate for a country
adopting the presidential system to have a small number of
parties. This system still applies to Indonesia, but our country
has many parties.

The abundance of parties leads to intense competition in their
quest for influence and gaining power. Through a coalition,
different parties in a parliamentary system can easily unseat a
prime minister/cabinet head. This is not the case in the
presidential system, as the cabinet chief is also the head of
state.

Therefore, in my opinion, it would be worthwhile for party
leaders to consult and reach agreement on the system most
appropriate for Indonesia.

If the preference is for a small number of parties, it should
be a presidential system with direct elections. On the other
hand, if the multiparty pattern is adopted, it should be a
parliamentary system of government. This way, the political
crisis in the country could hopefully be gradually settled in
peace.
