MUI Urges Prabowo to Withdraw Indonesia from Board of Peace

Jakarta – The Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) has condemned armed attacks by the United States against Iran during Ramadan and called on the government to take a stance by withdrawing from the Board of Peace, a peace council established by US President Donald Trump.

In a statement, the MUI initially asserted that Ramadan should be respected by all humanity, as Muslims are simultaneously observing their annual fasting obligation. They considered the armed attack to be inconsistent with humanitarian values.

“The MUI condemns Israeli attacks supported by America as they contradict humanitarian values and the preamble of the 1945 Constitution,” the MUI said in a press statement numbered Kep-28/DP-MUI/III/2026, on Sunday (1 March 2026).

In the statement, the MUI also expressed deep sorrow over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as a result of Israeli-American attacks on 28 February 2026. “We express our condolences with ’Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. We pray that he will become an inhabitant of paradise as a martyr, Amen,” the MUI said.

The MUI also mentioned Iran’s retaliatory strikes against Gulf states that host US military bases. According to the MUI, Iran’s attack on Gulf states was retaliation for American and Israeli attacks targeting military installations. The MUI said Iran’s retaliatory strikes were justified and protected by international law.

“Therefore, to avoid broader escalation, America and Israel must cease their attacks on Iran as these attacks contradict article 2 (4) of the UN Declaration,” the MUI stated.

The Israeli and US military attacks on Iran also represent, in the MUI’s view, a serious escalation with the potential to draw the Middle East region into a broader open conflict.

The MUI said this situation should not be viewed as an isolated incident but as part of a larger geopolitical configuration. Therefore, the MUI believes all nations have a duty and responsibility to achieve peace in order to provide maximum protection for civilians.

“The strategic motive behind these attacks should be suspected as a systematic attempt to weaken Iran’s strategic position in the region whilst limiting Iran’s support for the Palestinian independence struggle,” the MUI said.

In the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the MUI encourages various nations to serve as mediators to halt military attacks that could become instruments of political pressure to secure Israeli regional dominance over Palestine.

The United States, which plays a central role in managing the Palestinian conflict through the Board of Peace, the MUI argues now faces a critical question: whether this strategy is genuinely directed towards just peace, or instead strengthens an unbalanced security architecture and buries Palestinian independence.

The MUI therefore calls on the Indonesian government to revoke its membership of the Board of Peace as it is seen as ineffective in achieving genuine peace in Palestine.

“Because what is happening is the opposite – Trump is conducting attacks together with Israel against Iran and triggering regional war involving various powers, both directly and through proxies,” the MUI said.

The MUI calls on Muslims around the world to continue performing Qunut Nazilah with sincere prayers during prayers to seek Allah’s assistance and protection for Muslims experiencing hardship, oppression, or disaster across the globe.

“The MUI calls on the UN and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to take maximum steps to halt the war and respect international law. The MUI believes that war will only bring global harm,” the MUI concluded.
