Jakarta — The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has weighed in on the alleged acid attack against KontraS (Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence) activist Andrie Yunus. MUI Deputy Chairman Buya Anwar Abbas has urged the National Police (Polri) to swiftly apprehend the perpetrator of the violent attack.

“Police must arrest the perpetrator who committed this violent act against our brother Andrie Yunus as quickly as possible,” the Muslim scholar told Republika on Sunday (15 March 2026).

Buya Anwar stated that his organisation strongly condemns the attack on the KontraS activist. As a result of the attack, Andrie Yunus suffered serious burns, including to his face, eyes, chest and both hands.

“We know that exposure of strong acid to the eyes and skin carries very high risk, potentially causing permanent damage, severe irritation and respiratory complications,” said Buya Anwar.

“We therefore request the police to apprehend the perpetrator as soon as possible, process the case and forward it to the Prosecutor’s Office to be brought to court, so that the perpetrator may be tried and sentenced in accordance with applicable law,” added the head of Muhammadiyah Central Leadership.

Ready to execute orders

The case affecting human rights activist Andrie Yunus has received direct attention from the Head of State. According to Police Chief General Sigit Listyo, President Prabowo Subianto has instructed Polri to thoroughly investigate the alleged acid attack against Andrie Yunus. The investigation must be conducted professionally and transparently.

“Regarding developments in the activist’s acid attack, I have received direct orders from the President to conduct a thorough investigation that is professional and transparent,” said General Sigit while inspecting Gubeng Station in Surabaya, East Java, on Sunday (15 March 2026).
