MUI to Draft Academic Paper for Bill on Handling LGBT Issues

The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has made the issue of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) a strategic agenda for the VIII Congress of Indonesian Muslims (KUII), scheduled to take place in Jakarta from 24 to 26 July 2026. The MUI is also currently preparing an academic paper as an initial step towards drafting a Bill on the handling of LGBT.

MUI Secretary-General, Buya Amirsyah Tambunan, stated that the discussion on the LGBT issue is driven by the council’s concern over the development of the phenomenon, which it believes requires serious attention. “This issue is very sensitive, very sexy, because it is already so concerning,” Amirsyah said during a visit to the Republika office in Tebet, South Jakarta, on Friday (17/7/2026). “Why is it concerning? Because if it is not anticipated, not prevented, the country will damage our generation and our nation’s society.”

According to him, the MUI is currently initiating the drafting of an academic paper for a Bill on the countermeasures or handling of LGBT. Once completed, the document will be submitted to the House of Representatives (DPR RI) as material for consideration in formulating regulations. “The MUI is currently initiating the creation of an academic paper for the Bill. God willing, in the near future, this academic paper on the Bill for the countermeasures or handling of LGBT will be submitted to the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia,” Amirsyah said.
