Jakarta, Kompas.com — Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, head of the MUI’s Foreign Relations and International Cooperation Division, said that Israel’s treatment of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) volunteers, including nine Indonesian citizens who were detained, merited condemnation.

‘This act of abduction really breaches international law and also goes beyond the bounds of conscience and reason,’ Sudarnoto told Kompas.com in a short message on Friday, 22 May 2026.

‘Furthermore, the IDF also treats these humanitarian fighters very harshly, inhumanely. They deserve to be condemned by everyone,’ he added.

In addition, Israel’s crimes continue to be carried out in various ways and levels with a clear aim of obstructing support for Palestine.

The Professor of History and Islamic Civilisation at State Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah also stressed that the nine Indonesian citizens who have now been released were the result of a joint effort by the government and wider society.

He said that the release of the humanitarian fighters teaches all parties that earnest, collective struggle, undertaken together, can succeed.

‘Therefore, the key to freeing Palestine and ensuring Israel faces international sanctions is unity and seriousness,’ he said.

‘We, the Consulate General’s Office of RI in Istanbul, praise the nine brothers who joined the Global Sumud Flotilla and who are with us in good health, although they endured physical violence for three to four days,’ said Darianto Harsono, Head of the RI Consulate General in Istanbul, in a video shared by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono on the Instagram account @menluri on Friday, 22 May 2026.
