MUI Requests Access to Strait of Hormuz for Indonesian Ships, This is Iran's Ambassador's Response
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), KH Cholil Nafis, has requested that the Iranian government open access for Indonesian ships in the Strait of Hormuz as part of the spirit of friendship and mutual assistance between nations.
This was conveyed by Kiai Cholil following a visit from the Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, at the MUI office in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Monday (6/4/2026).
In the meeting, Kiai Cholil directly requested that access for Indonesian ships in the Strait of Hormuz be opened, especially for the sake of national energy interests and the friendly relations between the two countries.
“Why can’t Indonesian ships pass through the Strait of Hormuz yet? Could it be helped for humanitarian reasons and our close unity? Perhaps, if possible, we request it for our energy interests, Indonesia’s interests, and good relations with Iran to be opened for Indonesia just like for our neighbouring country Malaysia,” said Kiai Cholil.
In response, Iran’s Ambassador Mohammad Boroujerdi revealed that the situation in the region has indeed impacted Indonesian ships. In fact, some of them were previously trapped due to the geopolitical tensions that occurred.
