Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) has expressed deep condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as stated in the MUI’s guidance regarding the escalation of Israeli-American attacks against Iran.

The MUI guidance was issued through letter Number: Kep-28/DP-MUI/III/2026, signed by MUI Chairman KH Anwar Iskandar and MUI Secretary-General Buya Amirsyah Tambunan on Sunday.

“The MUI expresses deep condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as a result of Israeli-American attacks. As martyrs, we pray that he becomes an inhabitant of paradise, Amen,” said MUI Chairman Anwar Iskandar whilst delivering the guidance.

Kiai Anwar stated that the MUI condemns the Israeli attacks supported by America because they contradict humanitarian values and the Preamble of the 1945 Indonesian Constitution, which states “…to participate in implementing world order based on freedom, eternal peace, and social justice”.

The MUI understands Iran’s attacks on the gulf nations as retaliation for American and Israeli attacks. According to the MUI, Iran’s retaliatory strikes are justified and protected by international law because the targets were military bases.

“Therefore, to prevent broader escalation, America and Israel must cease their attacks on Iran because such attacks contradict Article 2 (4) of the UN Declaration,” he said.

The MUI considers the military strikes by Israel and America against Iran to be serious escalation that could potentially draw the Middle East region into a wider open conflict.

“This situation should not be viewed as an isolated incident, but rather as part of a larger geopolitical configuration. It is the duty and responsibility of all nations to achieve peace in order to provide maximum protection for civilians,” he stated.

The MUI believes the strategic motive behind these attacks should be suspected as a systematic effort to weaken Iran’s strategic position in the Gulf region, whilst simultaneously limiting Iran’s support for the Palestinian independence struggle.

In the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the MUI encourages various nations to act as peacemakers to stop military strikes that could potentially become instruments of political pressure to secure Israeli regional dominance over Palestine.

The MUI stated that America, which currently plays a central role in managing the Palestinian conflict through the Board of Peace (BoP), now faces a significant question as to whether this strategy is genuinely directed towards just peace or rather strengthens an inequitable security architecture that buries Palestinian independence.

“For this reason, the MUI urges the Indonesian government to withdraw its membership from the BoP because it is deemed ineffective in realising true independence in Palestine,” said Kiai Anwar.

The MUI believes the opposite is occurring, with United States President Donald Trump launching joint attacks with Israel against Iran and triggering a regional war involving various powers, both directly and through proxies.
