Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) KH Marsudi Syuhud has expressed deep concern and condolences over the earthquake that struck communities in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province.

“Innalillahi wa innailaihi raji’un. On behalf of the entire MUI family, we extend our deepest condolences over the earthquake disaster that has befallen our brothers and sisters in NTT. May the deceased have their good deeds accepted and be placed in the best place beside Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala (SWT), and may the bereaved families be granted patience and fortitude,” said KH Marsudi Syuhud in a written statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He also called on all elements of the nation to move together, extend a helping hand and assist the disaster victims.

“This disaster is our shared sorrow. We urge Muslims and all Indonesians to strengthen humanitarian solidarity. Let us channel our concern, whether through prayers or material assistance, to ease the burden of our brothers and sisters in NTT. To the government and disaster management agencies, we hope that emergency handling and aid distribution can proceed swiftly and evenly,” he said.

Based on preliminary reports from disaster response teams in the field, he said a number of residents were reported injured and hundreds more had to flee to safer locations.

Joint SAR teams together with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), National Police (Polri) and volunteers continue to carry out evacuation efforts and distribute emergency logistical aid to affected areas.
