Jakarta – The Chair of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) for Women, Youth, and Family Affairs (PRK), Siti Ma’rifah, has called on law enforcement agencies to impose maximum penalties on perpetrators of sexual violence in pondok pesantren. She stressed that this serious crime must not be settled informally within families, particularly given the power dynamics that exert pressure on victims through religious doctrines. Siti Ma’rifah expressed profound regret over the recurrence of sexual violence incidents in pondok pesantren. She emphasised that these institutions should provide a sense of safety and comfort for santri pursuing their studies. “It is disheartening that this heinous, immoral act is committed by those who should protect, guide, and set an exemplary example,” said Siti Ma’rifah in a written message received by Republika on Monday (11/5/2026). She encouraged efforts to prevent sexual violence in educational institutions or pesantren by adopting a firm stance and showing no tolerance for any form of sexual violence or sexual acts whatsoever.
