Council warns attack could trigger wider Middle East conflict

Indonesia’s top Islamic authority has strongly condemned the joint US-Israel military strike on Iran, calling it a threat to global peace and regional stability.

MUI Slams Joint Military Strike

The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) condemned the attack launched by the United States and Israel on Iran on Feb 28, describing it as a serious escalation that undermines global peace efforts.

Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, Head of MUI’s Foreign Relations division, said the strike demonstrates that the US-backed Board of Peace (BoP) has failed in its mission to uphold justice and stability.

Board of Peace “Losing Legitimacy”

Sudarnoto argued that the existence of the BoP is increasingly meaningless, saying it has lost moral, political and legal legitimacy. He accused US President Donald Trump of “hijacking” the concept of peace to advance hegemonic interests.

According to him, the attack on Iran proves the BoP cannot be trusted as an international body genuinely committed to Palestinian independence or regional justice.

Warning of Regional War

MUI warned that the US-Israel military action risks triggering a broader war in the Middle East. Sudarnoto suggested the escalation could destabilise the region further and shift the geopolitical balance.

He claimed the move may be aimed at weakening Iran’s strategic position and limiting its support for Palestine, thereby strengthening Israel’s dominance in the region.

Call for Indonesia to Stay Clear

The council urged the Indonesian government to reject any form of military aggression and avoid involvement in the conflict. It called on Jakarta to uphold international law and advocate for a peaceful, just resolution.

MUI stressed that the strike represents a wider geopolitical configuration in which Iran has become a target of larger power rivalries.

Explosions Reported Across Iran

The attack reportedly involved joint US-Israel operations, according to a US official cited by Al Jazeera. Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz described the strike as part of a broader security move and declared a nationwide state of emergency.

Explosions were reported in Tehran, with thick smoke seen rising over parts of the capital. Local media also reported blasts in Kermanshah, Lorestan, Tabriz, Isfahan and Karaj.

MUI’s condemnation highlights Indonesia’s sensitivity to escalating Middle East tensions and its consistent stance on Palestinian issues. As geopolitical risks intensify, Jakarta faces mounting pressure to balance diplomatic caution with its advocacy for international law and peace.
