MUI Condemns US-Israel Attack on Iran, Urges Indonesia to Withdraw from BoP
The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has issued an official stance condemning the combined military attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran.
Through its official statement, the MUI simultaneously expressed condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the attacks. According to the MUI, the US and Israeli strikes on Iran constitute a violation of a nation’s sovereign boundaries.
“The MUI condemns the Israeli attack supported by America, as it contradicts humanitarian values and the 1945 Constitution, namely ‘upholding world order, based on independence, perpetual peace, and social justice,’” the MUI stated in its declaration on Sunday, 1 March.
The MUI assessed that the retaliatory attacks between the two factions represent a serious escalation capable of triggering wider conflict in the Middle East. According to the MUI, such a situation cannot be overlooked.
“Therefore, to prevent further escalation, America and Israel must cease their attacks on Iran as this contradicts Article 2 of the UN Declaration,” the MUI stated.
Furthermore, the MUI views the attacks as a systematic attempt to weaken Iran’s position in the Middle East while simultaneously limiting that Islamic nation’s support for Palestinian liberation efforts.
The MUI called upon all nations to serve as peace brokers in the conflict and to end the use of military force in limiting Israeli dominance over Palestine.
Additionally, according to the MUI, the US is playing a role in the conflict through the Board of Peace (BoP). The MUI questioned whether the BoP is directed towards just peace or instead strengthens an unequal security architecture and buries Palestinian independence.
“Therefore, the MUI urges the Indonesian government to withdraw its membership from the BoP, as it is deemed ineffective in achieving genuine peace in Palestine.”
